The Cardinal Theatre Time Capsule

A time capsule is a historic collection of documents, goods, or items from a certain year or period of time that is buried with the intention of being opened years later — whether 50 years, 100, 200, or more.Two notable time capsules have been opened in the United States in 2015. The first was a capsule buried in Boston by Samuel Adams and Paul Revere in 1795. When opened in January of 2015, more than 200 years later, among its contents included five newspapers, a Massachusetts commonwealth seal, a title page from Massachusetts colony records, and coins.The second time capsule, revealed in June of 2015, was located Baltimore’s Washington Monument, having been buried in 1915. This capsule included early pictures of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, a portrait of Frances Scott Key (the writer of the “Star-Spangled Banner”), and newspapers.On a local scale, we have a time capsule right in the Lassiter District of North Hills ready to be opened on June 8, 2017. When the Cardinal Theater was built in 1967, this time capsule was buried in the sidewalk outside the theater (which is now Bonefish Grill).
